The Ashley House is an “Antebellum Raised Cottage”. The Home boasts of Greek revival influence, which includes columns, wide doors, high ceilings and crown molding. Records indicate the Ashley House is one of the oldest in the neighborhood, built in the 1840’s. The raised style was originally developed to protect owners from the superstition that all fevers such as yellow fever and malaria come from the ground.
Although the history of ownership is vague, noted facts provide that the Phillips family originally owned the House. During the Civil War, the Ashley House served as a boarding home for Confederate prisoners of war. Wilbur E. Meneray, Ph.D., head of the rare books and manuscripts collection in Tulane University’s Library authenticated graffiti left on the walls of an upstairs room in 1993. Mr. D.R. Carroll owned the House from the 1850’s until the land was subdivided into smaller lots in 1896. Mr. Duncan Kenner, for which the city of Kenner (A New Orleans suburb) was named, is said to own the land the house occupied.
The subject of numerous paranormal investigations, the house is said to be one of the most haunted homes in the Nation! In fact, some have even attested to having experienced encounters with said entities. Take comfort though, in the fact that these are Southern ghost…and they welcome you with Southern hospitality.
The Home is furnished with authentic antiques and period reproductions from the 1800’s. The Home also features a spiral staircase, crystal chandeliers, and opens out into a lush courtyard with heated pool. Elegant surroundings and picturesque courtyard create the perfect ambiance for any special occasion at the Ashley House.
